3 Mil vs 4 Mil Contractor Bags: Which One Do You Actually Need?
Share
If you're standing in front of two boxes of contractor bags wondering whether the thicker one is worth it, here's the short answer: it depends on what's going in the bag. Both 3 mil and 4 mil are heavy-duty. The difference is what they're built to survive.
What "mil" actually means
A mil is one-thousandth of an inch — a measure of the bag's wall thickness. Higher mil means a thicker, more puncture-resistant, more tear-resistant bag. It does not mean a bigger bag; a 3 mil and a 4 mil in the same gallon size hold the same volume. The thickness is about toughness, not capacity.
At OX Plastics, we list true mil — the actual measured thickness, not an "equivalent" rating. When we say 4 mil, it's 4 mil.
When 3 mil is the right call
3 mil handles the majority of heavy jobs without overpaying:
- General construction cleanup — drywall scrap, packaging, wood offcuts
- Yard and landscaping waste — branches, sod, trimmings
- Warehouse and facility trash
- Retail, restaurant, and event breakdown
If your debris is heavy but not sharp, 3 mil is usually all you need, and it costs less per bag.
When you should step up to 4 mil
Go 4 mil when the load fights back:
- Demolition debris — broken tile, brick, concrete chunks
- Sharp scrap — metal offcuts, glass, jagged plastic
- Roofing waste — nails, shingles, sharp granules
- Anything with edges that would slice a thinner bag
The 4 mil wall is what stands between a sharp load and a torn-open bag on the truck. On a demo site, the extra thickness pays for itself the first time a bag doesn't burst.
The simple rule
Ask one question: is the load sharp or just heavy?
- Heavy but blunt → 3 mil
- Sharp or jagged → 4 mil
When in doubt on a mixed job, size up. A blown-out bag costs you far more in cleanup time than the price difference between 3 and 4 mil.
