Best Contractor Bags for Construction Sites — What to Look For

If you've ever had a contractor bag split open mid-job, you already know — not all trash bags are the same. On a construction site, you're dealing with drywall scraps, broken tile, wood debris, sharp metal edges, and heavy material. A standard kitchen bag won't cut it. Here's what to look for.

Mil Thickness Is Everything

Mil refers to the thickness of the plastic. Most store-bought bags are 0.9 to 1.2 mil — fine for kitchen trash, useless on a job site. For construction cleanup you need a minimum of 3 mil. For demolition work, broken glass, or sharp debris, go to 4 mil.

At OX Plastics we manufacture bags from 1.5 mil up to 4 mil. The 4 mil is our thickest — built for the most demanding jobs.

Size Matters Too

The standard contractor bag is 55 gallon, sized at 36" x 52". That fits most standard job site bins and toter cans. If you're working with larger outdoor containers or dumpster liners, look at 95 gallon bags (61" x 68").

For medium cleanups — office renovations, light demo, yard waste — a 42-46 gallon bag at 37" x 43" works well and is easier to handle when full.

Buy in Bulk, Save Per Bag

On a job site you go through bags fast. Buying in bulk — 50, 100, or more per box — drops your cost per bag significantly. OX Plastics sells direct from our manufacturing facility in Queens, NY, so there's no distributor markup.

What to Avoid

Avoid bags marketed as "contractor grade" at big box stores — most are 1.5 to 2 mil at best, imported, and overpriced for what you get. If a bag doesn't list the exact mil thickness, that's a red flag.

Bottom Line

For construction sites: 3 mil minimum, 55 gallon size, buy in bulk. If you're doing demo or handling sharp material, go 4 mil. American made bags from a manufacturer will outperform imported store brands every time.
