Trash Bag Size Chart: Can Size, Bag Dimensions and Mil Thickness
Match the bag's width and length to your can, then choose a mil thickness for the waste you collect. Gallon labels are a starting point, not a guarantee of fit: cans with the same capacity can have different shapes.
Can size, bag dimensions and thickness
The dimensions below are the flat bag dimensions shown on OX Plastics product listings, not the dimensions of the can. Check the exact product and pack before ordering.

Recycling and roll-bag options
- 55 gallon blue or clear liners: 36" x 52", 1.5 mil.
- 46 gallon blue recycling bags: 37" x 46", 1.5 mil.
- 60-65 gallon clear bags: 41" x 55", 1.5 mil.
- Roll bags can differ from the standard dimensions above. Check the selected listing, especially its width and length, rather than relying on the gallon label alone.
How to check the fit
Measure the can and compare the new bag with a liner that already fits it. Allow enough length to reach the bottom and fold over the rim, with room to close the bag. A bag that reaches the rim but does not reach the bottom can slip or stretch under a load. For an unfamiliar can, try a smaller pack before stocking up.
What does mil mean?
Mil measures film thickness. It is different from milliliters (mL), which measure volume. Choose thickness and size separately: a larger bag is not necessarily a thicker bag.
- 1.5 mil: consider for lighter everyday waste.
- 2-2.5 mil: compare for general commercial cleanup.
- 3 mil: compare for more demanding contractor cleanup.
- 4 mil: the thicker option in this range for demanding loads.
Thickness alone does not set a safe lifting weight or make a bag puncture-proof. Do not put exposed sharp objects, hot material, chemicals or hazardous waste into a bag without following the applicable handling and disposal rules. Do not overfill; split heavy loads into manageable amounts.
